1 USB wall plug
1 USB cable
1 Magnetic and locking base for mono/tripod mounting
1 Micro SD to SD card adapter
The included 16GB card is pre-installed, and I immediately checked how difficult, or actually, rather easy it is to swap out (to a 64GB), very easy, no sticking, nice little recessed area for depressing your finger and then using that same recessed space to give you a little more grip on the mSD card while taking it out. I spent a good 10 minutes just fiddling with the parts and checking the fit and finish, and I felt there was no faults to be found, the magnetic base made it effortless to attach, and a simple twist locks it in (it covers the micro SD card slot, so there is more than just a press to get it out, but all parts play well together). Okay, enough about the physical appearance, packaging, and design, lets get down to business.
-Connectivity, no issues, everything works great, really. I can't think of much to say here. No random drops, no interference, nothing (so far). I wish my mirrorless camera can just connect to the damn app so I can transfer some photos to my phone sometimes...
-Sound, I would rate it a good solid step above using a phone, the sound recording is pretty clear if just a bit muffled, and do well recording voice (only thing I tried). Background noise seems well controlled. I haven't tried out manually adjusting gain and left it alone in auto gain and felt it just works, good for helping beginners like me get some audio that isn't all distorted and blown out in situations where the sound level may change drastically. Is it perfect? Uh.. probably not??? But its good and satisfying to know that the mic is constantly adapting to the situation.
-Camera, I remember when 4K video recording first came out and there was a huge deal about cropping frames out to use as photos, that was an incredible idea, not sure if it ever took off though... I feel Mevo's concept is very similar, or coincidental, not sure... It is a 4K resolution sensor, that means you have a huge canvas to play with and zoom, pan, crop whatever you want in a huge picture, live. I think 720p is fine, some may disagree, but I am not sure if there is a real advantage here going to 1080p many platform compresses the videos anyway dont they? I wonder if Livestream can release a firmware to allow 1080p recording/streaming and leave it up to the user's digression.
Its not a large sensor, and it doesn't perform like one. It performs like a good small sensor. This means it's not design to work well in the low light or dark, if lowlight recording is your goal, you are looking in the wrong place. Most small sensor cameras (including action cameras) in similar price range won't do much better IMO. Maybe Livestream can make some light attachments in the future as accessories?
-Battery life... Guys, seriously this thing is a size of half a can of redbull... you don't really expect more than a hour of battery life right? I didn't, but at the same time, I wasn't WOW'ed by it. Keeping things in perspective, I think Livestream did a great job on size/weight and capabilities vs battery life. One can always grab a battery brick (who doesnt own one now a days?) and keep it hooked up for longer streams/recordings.
I don't think I've tried everything Mevo camera has to offer yet, but its on to a great start for me. Anyway to wrap things up since I know I went off tangent and kept talking about random things... but this thing makes videos fun and easy! I love the idea of putting the camera in one place and just adjusting framing with your iPhone or iPad. It can make a decent video/stream with minimal effort, and you look like you used some decent rig to make it happen too! But in reality you used a camera that is half the size of a can of redbull and 1/10th the cost of pro gear... to deliver hopefully cool content.
I'd like to see Livestream release some light accessories, maybe a lens protector of some kind, and maybe a firmware to try out 1080p if possible?
Final Verdict: I would recommend this product since it performs well within expectations if not slightly exceeded.
We originally purchased the Mevo so my wife could live stream her final presentations at school, as part of her grad school project. When we started playing with it, we immediately thought it would've been a great idea to use it to live stream our wedding, but alas, we were late to the game, so will have to use it for our honeymoon instead.
The app you use to control the camera is intuitive and easy to use, it really makes you feel like a camera director in no time. We even used the camera underground to film a group of subway dancers in NYC. While filming, the WIFI signal that connects with your phone was a bit glitchy, but the recorded video was smooth and crystal clear. Oh, and that's another thing... the video quality is fantastic, with fast internet access the quality is really superb, the camera changes and pannings are seamless and your videos end up looking very professional.
We haven't used the Mevo with a pro livestream account yet, so we don't know how the experience is enhanced, and the battery life could improve, but it seems that problem could be fixed with the Boost that's sold separately.
Big mistake. The new version has a much better set of antenna's for networking, but it's very unstable (software) and they have what appear to be serious quality control issues. Mine was brand new in a shrink wrapped box and one of the two mics in it is completely dead. Several other issues as well. So, I'm taking this down to a 1 star. If they fix things, I'll put i back to a 4 star. It's a wonderully concieved product that's, so far, been badly executed on. Let's hope they get it right.
UPDATE 10-7-17: Upped it from 3 stars to 4 stars. I'm now able to live stream flawlessly to YouTube for 4-hour stretches over wifi (something it was choking on before). Next week I'll be running live streams in real world environments (vs. the 'test it at home on my own network to youtube that I just did). If THAT works.. i'll bump it to 5 stars, because, then it'll be doing everything that they've been promising us it'll do.
UPDATE 10-4-17: 3 star. Support of the product really is stellar. They're on top of it, even if their development teams seems a bit weak on product testing. After emailing and calling them, they updated the app (twice!) and the firmware on the camera, and all seems to be working well in testing. We'll see in real world mode (can it run for 4 hours during a city council meeting, for instance). I have having trouble keeping it connected, especially when doing youtube streaming, 2 days ago. IF this continues to work as advertised, and it does it for long periods, I'll up it to 4, maybe even 5 stars. I really love the concept of this product. I've just had a hard time trusting that it'll work when I need it to so far.
UPDATE10-2-17: One star. I am returning this product. The android app just ‘stopped’ working saying it need to be updated. There isn’t an updated version on the Play Store so I tried uninstalling and re-installing. Same thing. My guess: They updated the firmware, but, didn’t release an updated android app. Bad bad bad Mevo. Very bad. I was trying to stream a City Council Debate and this thing failed on all accounts. Useless for live streaming. I ended up using the facebook app on my LG G6 (which worked flawlessly). Don’t waste your money on this. It’s just not ready for primetime and they’ve had over a year to get it stable and working. If they can’t do that after a full year in the market, I have real doubts they’ll ever do it. I will give them one last chance (calling support after I post this). IF they are able to fix this, I’ll update this. Until then: one star (really, zero stars).
It's very very good. It's not quite great yet though. However, considering what they're trying to do here, though, it's amazing it works at all. Especially at this price point.
I use it with both iOS and Android devices and it (mostly) works. There are periodic connection issues (it often takes multiple attempts and reboots to get it to connect to my iPad, for instance) although it seems to like my LG G6 phone just fine every time.
I was trying to deal with the connectivity issue and called the company and WOW.. excellent and fast support. Their call center is on the US- East Coast so, you're getting someone at their headquarters sitting in the same building as the engineers and marketing people. Kindof old school frankly.. and I love it. They answered on the 2nd ring and I waited for all of 45 seconds for a real live person to help (and she spent all the time needed to get things working..). Very impressive.
I Bought this with the MevoBoost (their powerpack/additional interface unit) and it works wonderfully. Did a 4 hour stream to FB and used less than 1/2 the battery pack's power.
This is one very impressive product and they seem to be updating it regularly, (mine just updated to add EIS- electronic image stabilization and connectively fixes- nice). If you're a small shop, an individual or a corporation or school that needs to do semi-pro live streaming, this is the unit to start with in my book.
So far we've used it (this week) for live streams at a library for an authors talk on his book, a 4-hour city council meeting, and a 2-hour city council debate. It worked quite well (once everything got connected) quite well. We're a small non profit local news outfit.
